This session aims to showcase and discuss enhanced optimisation processes during the design and well construction phases when utilising Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), Underbalanced Drilling (UBD), or Dual Gradient Drilling (DGD) applications. It will feature case studies addressing key challenges in MPD, UBD, and DGD well design, such as navigating narrow pore and fracture pressure windows, high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) conditions, stuck pipe incidents, and gas or water influxes, among others. An optimised well design relies on an adaptive approach—combining scenario planning, regional expertise, the effective use of accurate data, and a collaborative multi-disciplinary team effort. These elements are critical to ensuring the well reaches its target safely and efficiently. This session will serve as a key enabler for unlocking innovative strategies and principles when working with MPD, UBD, and DGD technologies.

Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) has consistently proven to enhance operational safety across all types of wells, not just those with narrow pressure margins. The addition of MPD equipment significantly improves well control, reducing risks and enhancing overall drilling efficiency. A key factor in ensuring safe operations is the rig crew’s familiarity with MPD equipment and procedures—greater experience leads to safer execution.
The integration of MPD equipment into rigs has made its application more accessible and cost-effective for operators, extending its use beyond drilling to completions and other non-drilling activities during well construction. A critical aspect requiring careful attention is the seamless transition between MPD and well control, ensuring proper procedures are in place for safe and efficient switching.
This session explores the potential for permanently incorporating MPD equipment into rigs, integrating it with well control systems to facilitate smooth transitions, and emphasising the risk reduction benefits MPD brings to all well-related activities.

Energy demand continues to drive drilling activities worldwide, with increasingly challenging wells involving high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) conditions, depleted reservoirs, total losses, and other complexities. Both Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) and Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) techniques have evolved alongside advancing technologies to ensure safe and effective operations. When operations are well-prepared, incorporating best practices, contingency plans, and lessons learned from previous experiences, it becomes possible to drill wells previously deemed un-drillable and achieve well objectives successfully.
Real-world case histories of problematic wells—highlighting successful drilling and completion, as well as incidents encountered—provide valuable opportunities to develop a thorough and unbiased understanding of drilling challenges. Sharing these case histories is essential for operators and drilling contractors to learn from reliable, proven strategies, including background studies, selection criteria, successes, and challenges.
This session will explore various case histories, best practices, and lessons learned to support industry professionals in planning wells using MPD and UBD techniques. Additionally, insights into successes and shortcomings will be examined to further the safe and efficient application of MPD, UBD, and Dual Gradient Drilling (DGD) in modern drilling operations.

MPD has been proven to add significant value to challenging wells, reducing NPT and allowing wells to reach TD where conventional practices would have not allowed. Companies are increasingly using MPD for the other operations in the well, not just for drilling. This increases the utilisation of the equipment, and helps the rig crew to maintain proficiency in all MPD related operational procedures and tasks. In the end, MPD becomes the norm instead of the exception. The session will discuss examples of non-drilling operations using the MPD equipment on the rig, such as running casing and cementing, logging, fluid management, and Completions.
