Session 3: MPD-Rig Integration, Well Control & Risk Mitigation
Session Managers: Helio Santos, SafeKick Limited; Kevin West, Noble; Chu Mins Tue, ENEOS Xplora
Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) has consistently proven to enhance operational safety across all types of wells, not just those with narrow pressure margins. The addition of MPD equipment significantly improves well control, reducing risks and enhancing overall drilling efficiency. A key factor in ensuring safe operations is the rig crew’s familiarity with MPD equipment and procedures—greater experience leads to safer execution.
The integration of MPD equipment into rigs has made its application more accessible and cost-effective for operators, extending its use beyond drilling to completions and other non-drilling activities during well construction. A critical aspect requiring careful attention is the seamless transition between MPD and well control, ensuring proper procedures are in place for safe and efficient switching.
This session explores the potential for permanently incorporating MPD equipment into rigs, integrating it with well control systems to facilitate smooth transitions, and emphasising the risk reduction benefits MPD brings to all well-related activities.
