The SPE European Well Integrity Symposium Programme Committee invites you to submit a proposal for potential inclusion in the technical programme. Contribute to the future of well integrity and help create an impact in the energy community.

Designing for Well Integrity Throughout the Lifecycle

Authors are encouraged to submit proposals on Well Design Philosophies, Barrier Design, Geology and Cementing Considerations, and how early design decisions influence integrity performance throughout the well lifecycle. Authors are encouraged to share lessons learned from Field Developments, Design Trade-offs between cost, Risk, and Robustness, approaches to designing for abandonment and repurposing, and methods for incorporating operational experience into future well designs.

Well Integrity During Drilling and Well Construction

Prospective authors are invited to submit paper proposals addressing Well Construction challenges and the implementation of integrity barriers during Drilling and Completion Operations. Topics may include Cementing Performance, Zonal Isolation, Barrier Verification, Quality Assurance Processes, Management of Deviations from Design, Construction-related Integrity Risks, and lessons learned from Drilling decisions that have influenced long-term Well Integrity performance.

Well Integrity During Operations: Surveillance, Risk, and Performance

Submissions are sought on the management of well integrity during the operational life of the well. Authors are encouraged to share experiences related to integrity monitoring and surveillance, diagnostics, annulus pressure management, Well Integrity Management Systems (WIMS), risk-based decision-making, mature assets, legacy wells, fitness-for-purpose assessments, lifetime extension, digitalisation, predictive analytics, and integrity status forecasting.

Intervention and Remediation Strategies

Interested Authors are invited to Submit Paper Proposals focusing on maintaining and restoring Well Integrity through intervention and remediation activities. Papers may address Intervention Technologies, Remedial Cementing, through-tubing solutions, Integrity Restoration Strategies, Verification of Repair Effectiveness, Workover Challenges, Risk-based Intervention Planning, and lessons learned from Remediation Campaigns. Contributions discussing decision-making under uncertainty and the balance between intervention, monitoring, and abandonment are particularly encouraged.

We welcome the submission of paper proposals on Temporary and Permanent Abandonment, Long-term Barrier Performance, Plug and Abandonment Technologies, Barrier Verification, and Post-abandonment Integrity Assurance. Authors are also encouraged to submit contributions related to Well Repurposing Opportunities, including CCS, Geothermal Energy, Hydrogen Storage, Gas Storage, and Strategies for managing long-term liabilities associated with end-of-life wells.

Authors are invited to submit paper proposals on topics that span multiple stages of the Well Lifecycle or address broader industry challenges and future opportunities. Contributions may include AI and Automation, Advanced Analytics, Workforce Development, Lifecycle Competence Management, Regulation and Standardisation, Industry Collaboration, Emerging Technologies, Risk Perception, Energy Transition Challenges, Future Well Integrity Management Systems, and lessons learned from industry best practices and recurring Integrity Issues.

Paper Proposal Information

Please note that abstract submissions should be formatted into four (4) specific paragraphs:

  • Objectives/Scope: Please list the objectives and/or scope of the proposed paper. (25–75 words)
  • Methods, Procedures, Process: Briefly explain your overall approach, including your methods, procedures and process. (75–100 words)
  • Results, Observations, Conclusions: Please describe the results, observations and conclusions of the proposed paper. (100–200 words)
  • Novel/Additive Information: Please explain how this paper will present novel (new) or additive information to the existing body of literature that can be of benefit to and/or add to the state of knowledge in the petroleum industry. (25–75 words)

The following guidelines apply:

  • DO NOT include title or author information in your abstract
  • Word Minimum: 225
  • Word Maximum: 450

ORCiD ID

SPE has adopted ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), a widely accepted unique identifier for authors, giving them control over their content and eliminating ambiguities. All SPE contributors are encouraged (but not required) to have an ORCID iD.  If you have an ORCiD, ID please add it to your SPE Member/Customer Profile. General Guidelines

  • Obtain the necessary clearance from your management, your partners, and customers BEFORE submission
  • Authors whose paper proposals are accepted will be required to provide a manuscript for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
  • Authors who do not submit a manuscript and the associated publication forms by the manuscript due date will be withdrawn from the program and will not be allowed to present per SPE’s No Paper, No Podium policy
  • If accepted, your paper proposal may be published, as submitted, in conference information media, including on the SPE website.
  • An agreement to present a paper at this SPE conference carries an obligation to participate in the event. Please review SPE's Author Guidelines for Papers.

A Word on Commercialism

SPE has a stated policy against use of commercial trade names, company logos, or text that is commercial in tone in the paper title, text, or presentation slides. Use of such terms will result in careful scrutiny by the Program Committee in the evaluation of paper proposals, and the presence of commercialism in the paper will result in it being withdrawn from the program.

Plagiarism Check

In an effort to further improve SPE’s technical quality standards, all submitted papers will be checked for plagiarism.

Company Approval

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain company clearance, to ensure the company understands that if the proposal is accepted, you will be required to travel to the event to present. All travel expenses (airfare, hotel, registration) associated with attending the conference are the responsibility of company or individual attending.
