Unlocking the Potential Beneath: Advancing Underground Space for a Sustainable Energy Future

The accelerated development and utilisation of underground space is emerging as a critical enabler for the energy transition, resource optimisation and sustainable infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region. Subsurface formations including depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline aquifers and engineered caverns are increasingly deployed for applications such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), hydrogen storage, natural gas storage and integrated underground energy systems.

This workshop aims to advance strategic dialogue on the evolving role of underground space in supporting the energy transition, with a focus on natural gas storage, emerging storage solutions, and CO₂ utilisation and sequestration. It will address key technical and operational challenges while promoting integrated, multidisciplinary approaches to enhance subsurface performance, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. The goal is to strengthen international collaboration and knowledge exchange among industry leaders, enabling the development of scalable solutions and fostering partnerships to accelerate progress in underground space utilisation.
