Evaluation of preexisting materials in a well is critical to ensure proper abandonment. For example, a cement sheath which is not providing zonal isolation would need to be addressed prior to abandonment. This session will focus on evaluation of materials in the well prior to any additional actions. Topics will include well logging, tracers, and other evaluation methods as well as their importance in long-term integrity with respect to well abandonment.

Chairs: Lance Sollohub, Cudd Energy Services; Maggie Benge, Premier Corex

The use of alternative materials in cement systems continues to evolve as the industry learns from experience and invests in material science, all while managing cost pressures. While not new, gaps remain in assessing material suitability for abandonment operations and in defining qualification criteria set by regulators or operators. This session will highlight current alternative materials in use and offer insights and cautions for their future application.

This session will explore regulatory frameworks and barrier requirements governing the abandonment of oil and gas wells, with a focus on cementing practices. Attendees will gain insights into state and federal standards with emphasis on how these regulations impact cement design, placement, and verification. Technologies and regulations must align to ensure proper practices at all jurisdiction levels. This session will provide an understanding of how regulatory expectations shape cementing strategies and how new technologies can shape regulatory requirements.
