There are tens of thousands of wells that require either permanent abandonment or re-abandonment due to inadequate plugging practices during the original abandonment. Cost-effectively placing an adequate barrier can be challenging in many of these wells for numerous reasons including lack of well data, uncertainty of the quality of cement in the annulus, placing cement behind concentric casing strings, difficulty placing cement plugs under certain well conditions, verification of cement barriers, operational limitations for light well intervention rigs and qualification of cementing materials.
This workshop will focus on several key topics including:
- Evaluating preexisting materials in the well
- Annular isolation assurance - challenges and methods
- Plug placement techniques
- Cement system alternatives: evaluation and qualification of non-portland abandonment materials
- Barrier requirements/regulations
- Barrier verification in P&A wells: cementing challenges and solutions
