Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) is expected to play a critical role in supporting global decarbonisation ambitions and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Carbonate reservoirs present unique characteristics compared to clastic reservoirs. Their highly heterogeneous pore systems, natural fractures, vugs, and complex diagenetic history can significantly influence CO₂ injectivity, plume migration, containment integrity, and long-term storage performance.  Late-life and mature carbonate reservoirs offer significant potential for long-term CO₂ storage due to their widespread distribution, substantial storage capacity, and the extensive subsurface knowledge developed through decades of hydrocarbon exploration and production. This presents a unique opportunity for the oil and gas industry to leverage its expertise in reservoir characterisation, geological modelling, well engineering, and field operations to accelerate the deployment of carbon storage projects. The successful implementation of CCS and CCUS projects in carbonate reservoirs requires a multidisciplinary approach encompassing storage capacity assessment, containment integrity, injectivity evaluation, geomechanics, well and facility integrity, monitoring and surveillance, regulatory compliance, and economic viability. Feasibility studies must address not only the technical suitability of storage sites but also long-term storage security through robust measurement, monitoring and verification programmes to ensure safe and permanent CO₂ containment. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of CCS in carbonate reservoirs, covering site screening, characterisation, modelling, injectivity and containment assessment, monitoring and surveillance, risk management, regulations, and policies, as well as lessons learnt from global case studies.

Subtopics may include but not limited to:

    • Screening and Qualification of Carbonate Reservoirs for CO₂ Storage
    • Reservoir Characterisation and modeling for CCS Development
    • Well, Facility, and Infrastructure Readiness for Carbon Storage
    • CO₂ Injection performance, Storage Efficiency, and Operational Optimisation
