Carbonate Reservoirs are Among the Most Prolific Hydrocarbon Systems Globally

Carbonate reservoirs are among the most prolific hydrocarbon systems globally, yet they remain some of the most technically complex to develop and manage. Their inherent heterogeneity, intricate pore structures, and natural fracturing present significant challenges across the reservoir lifecycle. In today’s energy landscape—where efficiency, optimised recovery, and sustainability are paramount—an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to carbonate reservoir development is essential to unlocking their full potential.

This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the integrated workflows and technologies required for the successful characterisation, development and management of carbonate reservoirs. Participants will explore cutting-edge geological, petrophysical, engineering and digital methodologies through real-world case studies and collaborative problem-solving. Special focus will be placed on multidisciplinary integration, cost-effective field development strategies, and leveraging digital tools to enhance decision-making and reduce uncertainty from exploration to production.

 

The primary objective of this workshop is to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to address the technical and operational complexities of carbonate reservoirs using an integrated approach. Participants will gain a solid foundation in geological, petrophysical and engineering principles that govern reservoir behaviour and performance.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • Data Integration: Learn how to synthesise diverse datasets—ranging from core and log data to production and surveillance information—to build a cohesive reservoir understanding and improve predictability.
  • Advanced Modelling: Introduce modern static and dynamic modelling techniques, including machine learning-assisted workflows and uncertainty quantification, to support robust development planning and production optimisation.
  • Recovery Enhancement: Review state-of-the-art enhanced hydrocarbon recovery techniques tailored to carbonate settings, with insights into field applications and lessons learnt.
  • Digital Transformation: Emphasis will be placed on how digital technologies—such as real-time monitoring, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics—can drive efficiency and enable proactive reservoir management.
  • Sustainability and ESG: Address the integration of low-carbon strategies and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into reservoir development, aligning with the evolving expectations of stakeholders and regulators.

By fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and providing practical tools and case-based learning, this workshop aims to prepare energy professionals to meet the technical, economic, and environmental demands of modern carbonate reservoir development.
