Technical Topics

1. Integrated CCUS Projects

This session seeks case studies from operating or advanced-stage CCUS projects spanning capture, transport, utilisation, and storage. Submissions emphasising cross-disciplinary lessons, integrated project decision-making, cost reduction, and full-chain risk management, economics and optimisation approaches are encouraged.

2. CO₂ Capture

Papers are invited on advances in carbon capture, including but not limited to post-combustion, pre-combustion, oxy-fuel, and direct air capture technologies. Topics may include pilot-to-commercial-scale learnings, cost and energy optimisation, materials innovation, and integration with industrial facilities. Contributions may also address CO₂ treatment, specifications, and purification aspects of capture systems.

3. CO₂ Transport

This session welcomes papers on CO₂ pipeline design, fracture control, flowrate and CO2 specification measurement and management, compression strategies, offshore transport, CO₂ shipping, and other non-pipeline transport solutions, including intermediate storage. Authors are encouraged to share lessons learnt from technical studies, regulatory approvals, operational safety, and cross-border transport projects.

4. CO₂ Utilisation: EOR and Industrial Applications

Submissions are sought on CO₂-EOR and EGR performance, monitoring and accounting techniques, industrial utilisation pathways (e.g. cement, chemicals, fuels), emerging pathways (e.g. CO2-geothermal), lifecycle assessments, and economic value creation. Papers that link utilisation with permanent storage and robust emissions accounting are particularly encouraged.

5. CO₂ Storage: Screening and Site Characterisation

This session focuses on subsurface screening, characterisation, and capacity estimation for CO₂ storage sites, including reservoirs (aquifers, depleted fields and others) and caprock systems. Contributions may address geological uncertainty, data integration, containment assessment, and lessons learnt from site maturation and permit preparation.

6. CO₂ Storage: Reservoir Modelling and Injection Performance

Papers are invited on reservoir modelling, injection performance and storage resource estimation. Tools may include analytical models, material balance and numerical simulation including the application of AI and machine learning. Topics include pressure build-up, area-of-review management, geochemical and geomechanical response, plume migration, uncertainty reduction and application of the SPE Storage Resource Management System. Case studies demonstrating decision support and operational impact are particularly welcome.

7. Well Design and Legacy Wells

Submissions are encouraged on material selection, well construction, legacy well risk assessment, leak rate modelling, remediation strategies, cement and casing performance, and integrity monitoring. Papers highlighting operational experience, failure prevention, and long-term stewardship considerations are particularly relevant.

8. CCUS Storage Site Development: Containment and Seismicity Risk Management 

This session addresses the technical and operational challenges of developing CCUS storage sites with a strong focus on containment assurance and seismicity risk management. Topics include field development planning, co location and subsurface interference risks, injection, and completion strategy optimisation, and systematic risk identification and mitigation. The session highlights pressure and plume control, fault and fracture response to injection, induced seismicity monitoring, and the use of adaptive operational practices to safeguard storage integrity.

9. Measurement, Monitoring, and Verification

This session invites papers on state-of-the-art measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV) technologies. Topics include seismic and non-seismic methods, fibre-optic sensing, flow rate and contaminant measurement, pressure and geochemical monitoring, induced seismicity monitoring, surface and satellite monitoring, and integrated monitoring plans supporting long-term containment and assurance and compliance reporting.

10. Global CCUS Policy, Regulation, and Market Enablers

Papers are invited addressing evolving CCUS policy frameworks, national deployment strategies, permitting and international regulatory pathways, CCUS business models, carbon markets,and incentives, public engagement, and financial risk allocation. Comparative regional perspectives and policy-to-project case studies are particularly encouraged.

SPE must comply with all applicable sanction laws, including those of the United States and the United Kingdom. This includes screening individuals and entities against applicable lists of restricted parties to determine whether SPE is prohibited from, among other things, providing services to or receiving services from such parties.

As a result, your abstract will go through a compliance review and if identified one or more authors or the entity they represent is listed on the SDN sanction list, we must regretfully inform you that your paper will not be considered in forming the conference programme. Paper Proposal Information

Please note that abstract submissions should be formatted into four (4) specific paragraphs:

  • Objectives/Scope: Please list the objectives and/or scope of the proposed paper. (25-75 words)
  • Methods, Procedures, Process: Briefly explain your overall approach, including your methods, procedures and process. (75-100 words)
  • Results, Observations, Conclusions: Please describe the results, observations and conclusions of the proposed paper. (100-200 words)
  • Novel/Additive Information: Please explain how this paper will present novel (new) or additive information to the existing body of literature that can be of benefit to and/or add to the state of knowledge in the petroleum industry. (25-75 words)

The following guidelines apply:

  • DO NOT include title or author information in your abstract
  • Word Minimum: 225
  • Word Maximum: 450

General Guidelines

  • Obtain the necessary clearance from your management, your partners, and customers BEFORE submission
  • Authors whose paper proposals are accepted will be required to provide a manuscript by Friday, 18 December 2026, for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

  • Authors who do not submit a manuscript and the associated publication forms by the manuscript due date will be withdrawn from the program and will not be allowed to present per SPE’s No Paper, No Podium policy
  • If accepted, your paper proposal may be published, as submitted, in conference information media, including on the SPE website.
  • An agreement to present a paper at this SPE conference carries an obligation to participate in the event. Please review SPE's Author Guidelines for Papers.

A Word on Commercialism

SPE has a stated policy against use of commercial trade names, company logos, or text that is commercial in tone in the paper title, text, or presentation slides. Use of such terms will result in careful scrutiny by the Programme Committee in the evaluation of paper proposals, and the presence of commercialism in the paper will result in it being withdrawn from the programme.

Plagiarism Check

We expect authors to credit all sources used in their writings and not to represent the work of others as their own. Authors found to have plagiarized the work of another are subject to having their paper removed from the conference program and from OnePetro®. Future submissions from authors found to have plagiarized will be scrutinized carefully. In the case of students found to be plagiarizing the work of others, SPE may inform the student’s university.

In an effort to further improve SPE’s technical quality standards, all submitted conference papers will be checked for plagiarism.

Company Approval

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain company clearance, to ensure the company understands that if the proposal is accepted, you will be required to travel to the event to present. All travel expenses (airfare, hotel, registration) associated with attending the conference are the responsibility of company or individual attending.
