The Edgar Mine Tour is an optional post-workshop activity taking place on Thursday, August 7 in Idaho Springs. 

The Edgar Mine is a historic 19th-century silver and gold mine now owned and operated by Colorado School of Mines as a cutting-edge research and educational facility. This "underground laboratory" provides students and faculty with hands-on experience in mining operations and serves as a dynamic center for various research and innovation projects, including collaborations with government agencies and industry partners. The mine also engages with the public through guided tours, showcasing its historical significance and modern practices while prioritizing safety and environmental responsibility.

In addition to the standard educational and safety training facilities, the tour will showcase several research facilities. The first facility features flow loops equipped with fiber optics, including a buried gas pipeline section and a gas-liquid two-phase pipeline with undulations. Furthermore, a horizontal borehole with small inclination, instrumented with fiber optics and connecting two tunnels of the mine, will be presented. Additionally, we will highlight the Apache Drilling Laboratory, which includes a Sandvik DE-130 industrial coring rig used for drilling-related research and education.

The tour will be led by three faculty members at Colorado School of Mines:

  • Dr. Ge Jin from the Geophysics Department
  • Dr. Yilin Fan from the Petroleum Engineering Department
  • Dr. Mohamed Khaled from the Petroleum Engineering Department

NOTE: This tour is not affiliated with the SPE Workshop.  It has been kindly organized by CSM faculty as a unique experience for workshop attendees.

  • Transportation:  Not provided by SPE.
