Session 5: Case Studies of Marginal and Mature Field Projects

Wednesday, 22 April
Merbau 1 Ballroom, Level 12
Technical Session

Session Managers: Shahril Niza Abdul Aziz, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn.Bhd.; Ariff Irfan Zainai, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn.Bhd.; Ahmad Hisyam Faisal, PETRONAS; Coure Immacolata, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga

This session will highlight case studies on the redevelopment and optimisation of marginal and mature fields across the region. It will examine how integrated reservoir management, improved oil recovery (IOR) applications, and targeted infill drilling campaigns have been applied to maximise recovery and sustain production in declining reservoirs.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Fit-for-purpose facility designs for modular, phased, and cost-effective developments
  • Integration of subsurface and surface strategies to enhance field performance
  • Lessons learnt from IOR and infill drilling programmes, including both successes and challenges
  • Evaluation of commercial frameworks such as late life asset (LLA) and small field agreement (SFA) models
  • Strategies to align technical, operational, and economic priorities for long-term value creation
  • Case studies demonstrating successful redevelopment and optimisation of marginal and mature fields

Discussion Leaders:

  • Field S: Dealing with Surprises to Successfully Develop a Marginal Offshore Waterflooded Oil Field in Brunei by Siti Nazurah Muhd Azmi, Brunei Shell Petroleum
  • Delivering First Hydrocarbon Within 3-Years of Appraisal Drilling in a Marginal Oilfield: Case Study from Sarawak by Ankaj Kumar Sinha, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd.
  • Integrated Production System Modeling for Mature Asset Management: Lessons from Brunei Shell Petroleum by Maxim, Brunei Shell Petroleum
  • Fast-Track Co-Development of Marginal Fields through Synergies, Standardisation, and Cross-PSC Collaboration by Tan Siew Yan and Shehzada Shariff, Sarawak Shell Berhad
  • Optimising ESP Performance in Power-Constrained Offshore Fields: Permanent Magnet Motor and Digital Solutions for Mature Asset Redevelopment by Dicky Alviansyah and Arief Bakhtiyar, Baker Hughes
