Sam Buist

Sam Buist

Senior Geophysicist, bp

For over 15 years, Sam Buist has been working as a Development Geophysicist for BP. He spent his early career cutting his teeth at the top of the world in Alaska’s Prudhoe Bay where he was involved in the successful development of East Prudhoe. Midway through his time at BP he transitioned to the Houston office where he worked the relatively shallow Nakika field in the GoA. At only 13’000ft and mainly extra salt, the seismic quality was vastly superior to anything prior. This is where he was first introduced to wellbore seismic where he led the collection of a successful subsalt 3D VSP. In 2020, Sam completed a stint in Aberdeen, Scotland where he worked Clair Ridge before coming back to Houston where he has spent the reminder of his time in Atlantis, one of the most complex deep-water fields in BP portfolio, and most recently now as the lead Geophsycis for the Paleogene development with GoA, where it seems all cutting edge seismic technologies are tested.

Sam obtained his undergraduate degree in Geophysics from the University of Sydney Australia, and his Master from the University of Utah where he completed his studies in Geophysical Electromagnetic endeavors. When he is not working you may run into him and his family as they visit the countless National Park across America or trying to get a glimpse of the elusive whooping crane (he is not sure they are even real). In his spare time, Sam enjoys all things coffee, from teaching roasting classes to fixing older machines along with mountain biking and skiing.
