Session 5: Formation Damage - Challenges and Case Studies
Session Managers: Reinaldo Maldonado, Impact Fluids; Jasvinder Singh, Weatherford
There are a variety of damage mechanisms as wells are drilled and produced. There are Natural Damages which include fines migration, swelling clays, water-formed scales, organic deposits (wax or asphaltenes), emulsion blockage / change of wettability, water production, sand production. There are also Induced Damages which include drilling fluids or secondary and tertiary efforts by either chemical reactions or interaction of entrained solids, plugging by entrained particles such as solids or polymers in injected fluids, wettability changes caused by drilling, acid stimulation, or injected fluids, e.g., emulsion blockage.
This session provides an opportunity to show various chemical or mechanical solutions that have been used or present newer technology used to remediate these common problems. Is there a new less damaging mud system or additive in the drilling fluid to protect the reservoirs. Is there a new and improved acid system?
