Michael JL Aikman

Expert, Reservoir Engineering (Field Development), ADNOC

Dr Michael Aikman is employed by ADNOC in the Upstream Thamama Excellence Center, as “Expert, Reservoir Engineering (Field Development)”. He has over 34 years’ global experience including operational reservoir engineering, numerical reservoir simulation, field development and optimization, EOR, digital technology and data analytics. For the past 4 years, he has been researching and working in the renewable energy space on projects that interest him. This includes the intersect of project design and objectives, project economics and government policy. At ADNOC he works in many areas, including optimizing oil and gas field development plans, concurrent gas development, development of high H2S content gas reservoirs, and since early 2024, he has developed the project strategy for ADNOC’s West Abu Dhabi CCS project. In the past he has worked for Shell Canada, Petro-Canada, Maersk Oil Qatar, Occidental Petroleum and QRI. His education includes a diversity of programs:

  • B.Sc. (Biologic science, specialization in genetics; University of Alberta)
  • B.A.Sc. (Chemical Engineering, University of Toronto)
  • M.Eng. (Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgary)
  • Ph.D. (Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgary)
  • M.B.A. (dual majors: Global Finance, Organizational Behavoir; University of Texas at Dallas)

Michael actively supports the development of the next generation of energy workers. Since 2001, he has been an industry advisor for the 4th year capstone projects in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta) and Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi.
