The oil and gas industry has made strides in the past decade to build a more sustainable energy system. Recent global and geopolitical events have revealed how vulnerable the industry is to supply and demand disruptions. As a result, many energy companies have shifted their focus from energy sustainability to energy security. Energy security cannot be achieved in a vacuum. It must be accompanied by a strong focus on sustainability, emission reduction and scaling, and expanding clean energy technologies and supplies. Secure energy is sustainable energy, and sustainable energy can be a compelling business.
A sustainable energy system that does not ensure energy security is not sustainable at all. Conversely, a secure energy system that is not sustainable will do little to ensure long-term energy access and affordability. Energy security and sustainability go hand-in-hand. Striking the right balance between the two is critical.
This panel session will discuss the role of drilling technology in energy security with its impact on sustainability.

The panel discussion on the Drilling Market Outlook will focus on the post-pandemic and global geopolitical challenges in the supply chain, with a specific emphasis on the Middle East region. It is expected that the rig count in this region will grow by over 15% YOY leading to a sharp increase in demand for drilling services. The panel will discuss the implications of this trend on the global drilling market, as well as the potential opportunities and challenges to deliver a quick response to the growth.
Key topics of discussion will include the impact of geopolitical tensions on the supply chain, the role of technology in driving innovation and efficiency in the drilling industry, and the potential for growth in emerging markets. Overall, this session will provide valuable insights and perspectives on the future of the drilling market and the key factors that will shape its development in the post-pandemic world.

The term “energy transition” is increasingly being used in the media and is associated with the process of decreasing reliance on hydrocarbons in favour of wind and solar sources for power generation. In this context, drilling might appear to be a sector of our industry that is dying out. However, drilling activity will continue to grow for the following reasons:
- Short-term: Increased demand for energy means more oil and gas wells need to be drilled to fulfil immediate requirements as hydrocarbons remain the only energy source whose supply can be ramped up relatively quickly.
- Long-term: Most geothermal energy sources can only be accessed through wells. Also, the high economic value of natural gas will encourage operators to switch from gas injection to CO2 injection for pressure maintenance of reservoirs. In addition, an increase in carbon sequestration will necessitate a growth in demand for carbon storage, most commonly in the form of injection into hydrocarbon zones and aquifers.
In this panel session, speakers will discuss the changing nature of the drilling industry as the world transitions from hydrocarbons to renewable sources of energy.
