ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY 2: From Commitment to Action: Advancing Energy-Sector Contributions to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) sets an ambitious agenda to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and put nature on a path to recovery. At CBD COP17 in October 2026, Yerevan, Armenia, the focus will be on reviewing progress towards the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and identifying priorities for accelerating action for nature.
For the energy industry, understanding this evolving landscape is strategically and operationally important, particularly for companies working across diverse contexts. This session will help participants interpret what the KMGBF means for the sector, navigate differing biodiversity priorities across operating countries and regions, and identify practical ways for business to contribute to national and global outcomes.
Developed by Ipieca in collaboration with Fauna and Flora and with input from IUCN, the KMGBF Roadmap helps the energy sector identify and implement voluntary contributions, through national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and National Targets. As an implementation tool, it supports practical alignment with the KMGBF goals and targets across diverse business contexts.
Using real-world case studies and experiences, the session will explore how oil and gas and alternative energy companies are turning biodiversity commitments into action, and how collaboration among governments, industry and conservation organisations can accelerate progress towards the GBF goals. Participants will leave with practical insights into credible action, partnership opportunities and approaches that can be adapted across different operating contexts.
