Johana Dunlop has spent 32 years in the upstream oil and gas industry, notably a 27-year career with Schlumberger followed by a three-year term serving on the International Board of the Society of Petroleum Engineers as HSE & Sustainability Technical Director and running her own boutique consultancy on sustainable development strategy & operationalization before joining the IOGP in 2021, in the newly created role as Head of Membership Engagement driving growth and the value of membership to a highly diverse and global ecosystem of oil and gas operators, service companies.   

All her roles have provided her with an extensive view on the industry and a deep sensitivity to the range of imperatives and incentives driving each company’s choices, risks and ambitions.  

Johana’s career pivoted in 1998 after a sabbatical year in Post-Soviet Armenia volunteering with a grassroots aid agency which led to a move from risk management into the emerging field of business and sustainable development.   That experience catalysed her conviction that business was the greatest force for improving quality of life and that there were dimensions of business that were significant in societal impact - both beneficial and depleting – and were key to the future-fitness of any industry and its members as well as humanity’s ability to live within planetary boundaries.
