L01 Welcome Luncheon: Climate Crisis: What is True and What is Hyped?
Climate change represents the warming of earth by about 1.1 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial time. The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has risen from about 280 ppm in pre-industrial times to about 420 ppm today. CO2 being greenhouse gas, the rise of earth’s temperature due to higher concentration of CO2 is a physical reality. In addition to rise of earth’s temperature, what else has changed which is impacting humanity?
This presentation delves into details of what changes are measurable and attributable to climate changes and what changes are not measurable and cannot be related to climate change. The presentation will rely on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) sixth Assessment Report (AR6) which was published in 2021.
Certain effects such as warming of an ocean, warming of daily temperatures and reduction of coldest temperatures, as well as patchy rainfalls are real and measurable. However, many of the hyped events by the media are not measurable and not attributable to climate change. These include: flooding, rise in thunderstorms, rise in hurricanes or tropical storms, loss of agriculture, and natural fires. The presentation will augment the conclusions about various events with historical data.
Climate change is real; however, the benefits of fossil fuels outweigh the costs. Fossil fuels currently provide 80 % of the world’s energy and that number has not changed in the last 55 years. Adaption is a better strategy rather than elimination of fossil fuels to make the world safer.
